Where The Sunflowers Grow

WHERE THE SUNFLOWERS GROW is a non-verbal puppetry performance about the transience of life and our connection with nature. This performance is designed for intergenerational families with children between the ages of 5 and 12.

There will be a post-show segment after the performance.

SYNOPSIS

Ah Ma has a beloved Sunflower as her companion, which she lovingly tends to. Her daily routine involves watering the plant, checking the soil, sharing stories, and singing to the sunflower. One day, she notices her sunflower beginning to wilt and decides to rehome it in a beautiful forest. In this new, nourishing environment, the sunflower thrives and eventually becomes a sanctuary for other forest creatures.

One unexpected night, a huge storm claims the sunflower’s life, leaving Ah Ma to navigate her grief on her own. Despite the loss of her beloved sunflower, she continues caring for the forest creatures she has befriended over time. As time goes by, AH MA gradually grows older alongside her new friends while tending to them—until one day, she doesn’t.

Her absence is deeply felt by the forest, and over time, a field of sunflower shoots begins to sprout, surrounding the forest.

WHERE THE SUNFLOWERS GROW covers the theme of loss, grief and our relationship with nature. This performance hopes to de-stigmatise the topic of death around children and provide a safe environment for families to discuss the permanence of death, grieving and healthy coping strategies, bridging the understanding of life experiences between the young and the old.
